Murder Trial Hears Police Officer Not Told Richard Oland’s Death Was Suspicious

The second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland hearing from a Major Crime officer with the Saint John police who testifies the situation at Far End Corporation the day Richard Oland’s body was discovered was not what he expected.

Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Alan Gold, Constable Anthony Gilbert confirming that he arrived at the scene at 52 Canterbury Street at 9:35 on July 7, 2011 with Constable Stephen Davidson and officers who had been there for a half an hour prior did not tell him that this was a supicious death.

While under direct examination by Crown prosecutor Patrick Wilbur, Gilbert stating that he was inside the office for less than a minute and was not wearing any protective clothing at that time. He also said that he did not touch anything. After leaving the office he called Sergeant Dave Brooker to let him know about the scene, that it appeared to be something suspicious.

Cst. Gilbert being asked by Gold if he ever saw Davidson at a door on the second floor touching the handle with Gilbert replying no. He also testifies he never saw Davidson opening a door and looking outside. Earlier in the trial, however, Davidson speaking about the door in the foyer area on the second floor that leads to the alleyway saying it had a deadbolt on it and he unlocked it and looked outside.

Cst. Davidson took over as the lead investigator in Richard Oland’s death.
