A home for young pregnant mothers and their children could become a reality sooner than the Moncton YWCA had thought.
They had originally planned to build a new home on Fraser Avenue, that was sold to them by the city for $1. That has created controversy because some say it breaks a decade old promise to develop the land as a city park.
But the YWCA says they’ve found a residence on Kendra Street that has everything they need.
Executive Director Jewell Mitchell says it first requires rezoning, but if that is approved, it is a much better option for them.
She says, “It is much more affordable, and the most exciting thing about this facility is that we will be able to house women almost a whole year sooner than if we were going to do with new construction. The shortened timelines and the affordability that makes it able to have happen in a much faster timeframe.”
Mitchell says the 15 unit building, that used to house retired priests, has a large kitchen, and several meeting and learning spaces, and a large area where the children can play outdoors.
A public hearing is scheduled for February 16th at a Moncton City Council meeting to look at rezoning.
