The Moncton Wildcats are keeping it in the family.
The team announced Thursday that RJ Irving has been appointed team president, succeeding his late father Robert.
In a statement, Irving said it’s both an honour and responsibility to lead the Wildcats.
“This is a community-first organization,” he said. “And I will approach leading it with the same humility, stability and a long-term commitment to excellence as my father did.”
The announcement reinforces long-term stability for the franchise and ensures the team remains locally owned and operated.
“Junior hockey plays a unique role in our communities — bringing people together, developing young athletes, and creating lifelong memories for families and fans,” said Irving.
“The Moncton Wildcats have built an outstanding reputation both on and off the ice, and we are committed to preserving that culture while supporting the continued growth and success of the organization for years to come.”
The team also announced that GM Taylor MacDougall and head coach Gardiner MacDougall will remain in their roles.
Taylor MacDougall said he and his father spent the last two years working closely with the other father-son team of Robert and RJ Irving.
“I can see no better fit than RJ continuing what his father started with the dedicated hockey operations and business operations team we have in place,” MacDougall said in a statement.
