Moncton Council Votes To Upgrade Tennis Courts

The tennis season is almost over and the City of Moncton hopes to repair some of its courts for next year.

City Council has voted to upgrade five tennis courts at a cost of just over $583,000

The upgrades will include the four of the ten tennis courts at Centennial Park and one court at Candlewood Park off Mapleton Road.

Councillor Pierre Boudreau cast the only dissenting vote after not getting the answers he wanted from city staff.

“I find it’s a lot of money for the city to commit to at this particular moment in time… not knowing how many people use them and how you access them as the general public,” he noted.

Moncton acting general manager of operational services Bruce Tait told council that drainage problems have caused the courts to deteriorate.

“It’s possible that the four (at Centennial) that have the improper drainage underneath them will easily be out of play for next year… so we could be down half the courts in Centennial Park,” Tait said.

He expects this work will mean a 15 to 20 year service life for the courts.

A staff report indicates that not replacing the courts would reduce Tennis Moncton’s ability to provide programming and it also exposes the city to risk from injury.

Avondale Construction was awarded the tender to do the work which is expected to be completed by June 30, 2021.
