Moncton is on its way to becoming an International City of Peace.
Darlene Doiron, from the Peace Leaders Collaborative told city council that Moncton already qualifies for the title, through past achievements and current initiatives.
“Becoming an International City of Peace is more than just a designation but a process of becoming and working toward advancing the practice of peace,” she says.
The application was filled out and submitted before being presented to Mayor Dawn Arnold and the rest of city council.
“This is a beautiful and hopeful project, and the timing is really quite wonderful. It’s very impressive when you take a look at all the initiatives that have already taken place in our community,” says Mayor Arnold.
These included an event with Nelson Mandela’s grandson in Moncton last April, peace leadership groups and strong connections with Rotary and YMCA Peace Building in Greater Moncton.
The city of Moncton will join 277 others including 5 Canadian cities in the initiative, but would become the first in Atlantic Canada.
Doiron says the hope is to have 1000 designated peace cities across the world by 2025.
