Moncton Teacher Says Learning Numeracy As Important As Literacy

Reading and Math go hand in hand, and it’s important that an emphasis be put on both, that according to a Math teacher from the Anglophone East School District.

Mike Ivey teaches at Queen Elizabeth School in Moncton. He say literacy has always been a priority, but now the province is starting to view math and reading on a level playing field He says, Math is also a language, “There is a language to Math, and that’s why we have a tendency to see students struggle in the beginning, because they don’t recognize that Math is a language. They see it see it as just numbers, and it far more than that.”

He says reading is important of course, but math is just as important, nd the two subjects need to be viewed in the same realm.
