Moncton City Councillors Ask Codiac RCMP For More Detailed Crime Numbers Breakdown

At least two Moncton City Councillors want to see a better breakdown of crime statistics for the area from Codiac RCMP.

Councillor Bryan Butler says the stats are generally clumped together, and not broken down into more specific categories.

“I think as a community, we should know do we have a real problem with break and enters into homes, or do we have a break and enters into businesses [problem]?” says Butler. “Maybe we should let them know so maybe they can get a better alarm system or do a CPTED, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.”

Butler wants to see crimes like break and enters subdivided into whether it was against a house, shed, or garage.

As a former police officer, he says being able to share these details publicly helped inform the community.

“We’d go talk to them, say have you seen anything?” says Butler. “Maybe be on the alert, put the volunteers, the auxiliaries out, so it’s important that fear is not a factor to bring into this, it’s knowledge.”

Councillor Shawn Crossman says keeping public safety in mind is the most important thing here.

He adds putting these numbers out as an overall stat, and not breaking them down is not increasing public safety.

“So we need to expose that, and we need to make sure the citizens understand ways they can improve those numbers, and help bring those numbers down because this is a citizen-RCMP concern that we need to address,” says Crossman.

Codiac RCMP Superintendent Paul Beauchesne says they’ve already implemented a new system, and will look into breaking down crime stats even further.
