Moncton City Council Reverses Mountain Road Decision

Moncton City Council is stalling plans to return Mountain Road, back to four lanes.

On August 20th, at a Moncton City Council meeting, Councillor Bryan Butler introduced a motion to have the Road reverted back to four lanes, and a vote by City Councillors approved the motion.

But, during a Committee of the Whole Meeting held yesterday, a motion was made by Councillor Pierre Boudreau not to make any further changes, and to leave the road as until at least September of next year.

Mayor Dawn Arnold says a vote was 8 to 3 in favour of supporting the motion, “There are a few little places that need some tweaking, but we will not take up those recent changes to Mountain Road. We are going to give it some time and analyze it again in one year.”

Mayor Arnold says she has heard from citizens who really liked the recent reduction to three lanes and the addition of bike lanes.

“I’ve been hearing from citizens who are really concerned because they loved the changes. It is very much a calming traffic initiative. It is about slowing traffic in that area. Listening to the feedback, we decided this would be the right things to do. It also falls in with our Destination 2040. We had many engagement sessions with the public and they clearly told us that they wanted this kind of traffic mitigation,” Mayor Arnold says.
