Commercial Building Down; Residential Building Steady In Moncton

Commercial building activity has dropped considerably while residential construction has remained steady according to figures released by the City of Moncton.

In the third quarter ending September 30, the City says the total value of building permits was about $57 million compared to about $100 million during the same period last year.

The total number of permits was 454, up from 324 in 2019.

Year-to-date permit values for 2020 (the first nine months) totalled $128 million versus $213 million last year but the City says the number of permits jumped 20 percent with many smaller projects being undertaken.

The bigger residential projects were three new apartment buildings.

Meantime, the larger commercial projects included a new building in Moncton Industrial Park West, renovations to a mixed use building at St. George and Archibald, a special care home on Pleasant, and a new equipment dealership near Caledonia Industrial Park.

Industrial permits included renovations to schools, hospitals and churches.

Director of economic development Kevin Silliker says the Moncton business community “continues to weather the pandemic admirably in spite of the uncertainty that lies ahead.”
