Minority Gov’t Leaves Uncertainty Around Policy Changes

Municipalities are not likely to see any of the provincial policy changes they have been seeking any time soon.

A UNB Saint John political science professor says with a minority government, we do not know who might end up forming government long enough to implement any policy changes, including municipal reform.

“We don’t know which dominant party will co-operate with which minor party and what type of compromise that could lead to and where that would take a number of policy areas,” J.P. Lewis told our newsroom.

Lewis said the Gallant Liberals are still in government right now — but the signs are pointing to the government not being able to survive very long.

“We know that it might be quite unlikely that he gets support from the People’s Alliance,” Lewis said, “and he needs more than just those Green votes to stay in power.”

The Green Party and People’s Alliance each picked up three seats in the election.

If the Liberals do not have enough support, the lieutenant-governor could invite Tory leader Blaine Higgs to test the confidence of the legislature.
