Maple Syrup Association Defends Proposed Changes

There’s discontent among maple syrup producers about the prospect of a marketing board with a plebiscite to be held.

Those producers who don’t like the prospect worry about restrictions being imposed on who can sell, how much can be produced and at what price.

Louise Poitras is Executive Director of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association and says none of those restrictions will come about. She has also heard the smaller producers fear the larger ones will have more of a say which isn’t the case either.

Poitras says the Association is at a crossroads because it no longer receives federal or provincial funding.

Results from the plebiscite are expected in September.
