The leader of the provincial Liberals says, if elected, he would move quickly to remove hurdles women face in accessing publicly funded abortions in New Brunswick.
Brian Gallant has previously said he would launch a review of a long-standing government regulation that sees medicare only pay for abortions approved by two doctors.
During a campaign stop in Moncton earlier this week, he told a crowd of supporters a Liberal government would eliminate those barriers, “We do not think that the province of New Brunswick is respecting a woman’s right to choose.”
Access to abortion services in New Brunswick has been a smouldering issue for years that was reignited in April when it was announced the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton would close its doors.
The Alward government has made it clear it has no plans to revisit the issue.
