It was great turnout in support of a One Meter Law for Ellen.
75 walkers and 49 cyclists made their way from the McBuns On Shediac Road to the Kay Crossman Arena, to honour 28 year old Ellen Watters, who was a rising star in the cyclist world, who was hit by a car and killed while riding her bike in Sussex. Rallies were also held in Fredericton and in Saint John.
Organizer Sheila Cameron says something needs to be done, before there are more tragedies like this, “We know that cyclists accidents are up, but that is partly because there are more people cycling, which is great, but now we have a critical problem that is is not meshing with, and there is no real sharing of the road, we feel.”
A petition is being circulated to raise more awareness of the One meter law for Ellen, and Cameron says, “The idea is there, but now we need to educate and we need to enforce, so we need legislation to help people to understand that they need to share the road.”
