Large Percentage Of Older Children In NB Children Awaiting Adoption

There are around 400 to 500 children available for adoption in New Brunswick. Over 60 per cent are over the age of 11.

Many of them are being raised in foster or group homes, until they eventually age out of the system.

Provincial Coordinator for the province’s Adoption Support Network Francoise Corbin-Boucher says they hope to encourage more families to adopt.

She says, “We work with adoptive families and waiting families and those thinking about adopting, with the hopes they might consider an older child, knowing that you will have support once they have the child in their home.”

She says there are many reasons that a family may not choose an older child, including concerns with their history.

The numbers never seem to go down. Once the children are old enough to care for themselves, or are adopted, there are others who replace them.
