The Greater Moncton River of Pride organization – which represents the LGBTQ+ community has reached out to the Village of Chipman in light of the so-called “straight” flag it had flown.
Spokesperson Charles MacDougall says River of Pride calls this incident disappointing, ignorant and a form of hatred.
“This is almost always a response to the LGBTQ+ community gaining more rights or more visibility. It is not equal to raising a Pride flag because everyday is straight pride day in a sense,” he notes.
MacDougall says it’s obvious the group that approached the village to fly the flag and the village council itself don’t understand why there was ever a need for a Pride flag to support the LGBT community.
He adds the Pride flag stemmed from violence against members of the gay community.
