MONCTON, NB–Residents are voicing their concerns after word that 30 million litres of fracking wastewater could be dumped into the Metro Moncton sewer system.
A Nova Scotia company is seeking environmental approval to dispose of the treated wastewater in the Dieppe municipal sewer system over the next two years.
About 50 residents were at Monday night’s Moncton city council meeting asking the neighbouring municipality to officially denounce the proposal because of the environmental and health risks.
Pamela Ross with the Council of Canadians says the wastewater will eventually end up in the Petitcodiac River, “The river has a life of its own and if it dies, so do all things that depend on it. Future generations are relying on us as responsible adults to do the right thing.”
Councillor Pierre Boudreau says Moncton has been in the dark about the plans, “The City of Moncton has not been privy to any of the information concerning this file, so we are as upset as a lot of citizens are.”
The company says its improved its treatment system and the water poses no human health or environmental risk.
Council didn’t take any action at last night’s meeting.
