Some of the clients that rely on the local food banks to feed their families are gluten or lactose free, or even diabetic.
Is Food Depot Alimentaire able to accommodate those needs?
President Dale Hicks says while they do their best to assist right now it is a difficult time, because all their additional funds are going to renovations at the Peter McKee Community Food Centre.
“Certainly it’s on our radar screen, it’s difficult right now to address it currently, but we certainly want to be able to provide that service in the future,” says Hicks.
He says their goal is to eventually be able to have a file on all of their clients.
“So we know, okay, well John Doe is coming in, and they’re diabetic, so we’ve gotta make sure we have something, that there’s gonna be their box that’s gonna get handed out,” says Hicks. “So we want to be able to deal with clients on an individual basis once we get settled down and a bit more organized, certainly, that’s the goal.”
For now, they are always open to taking donations like this to accomodate clients who have these special dietary needs.
“Between what we have out at our warehouse, I mean we have a huge walk in freezer, a huge walk in cooler, we could store it out at our warehouse, that’s not an issue,” says Hicks. “if someone has donations, yeah we’ll take ’em.”
His hope is they might be able to offer that service by the fall or in the new year.
