Father Finds Life-Saving Donor On Facebook

It’s the social media post that saved a Lunenburg man’s life.

Rob Edwards kidney’s had failed and without a donor he was performing dialysis five times a day.

He couldn’t find a donor, so last June he put out a call for help.

“I did a Facebook post that if anyone would be interested, or could help, to contact their doctor or the Kidney Foundation. I encourage anybody to do that now. There’s a lot of people in Nova Scotia that could use some help.”

Geoff Kennedy’s own father had been the recipient of a double lung transplant.

He says Edward’s post stuck a chord.

“Ended up reading the article. Thankfully, it included one particular detail about his blood type, and I just happen to know my own.”

From there, Kennedy decided to make contact.

“I reached out to Rob on Facebook and just sort of matter-of-factly said, ‘Hey, so, just thought I’d let you know, that I’m looking into seeing if I’m a match.’ God only knows how that message might have felt on his side.”

Kennedy was a match and the two men will undergo a kidney transplant March 19.

Edwards, who has a wife and two young sons says this will change not only his life, but theirs as well.

“I have a three-year old son, and he’s never known me not sick. So he’s going to get to know me.”

Both men are encouraging people to do whatever they can to support organ donation.
