Deep Learning Beneficial For Now And For Future

Educators from across Canada recently attended a conference in Moncton to learn more about deeper learning. It is a method that is being used in many of New Brunswick’s schools.

Marc Merhebi is a teacher at Hillcrest School where they are practicing deeper learning with their students, “We focus on real life scenarios, problem solving, and those kinds of things. Being able to dig deep into one subject and really getting a mastery of one thought and moving forward on that and applying it to new situations.”

He says they want their students to be innovative and to be problem solvers.

“We’re getting into these really rich conversations and talking about all kinds of things we want students to learn. The world is faced with an incredible number of problems and imagine if all of our students were problem solvers.”

Studies have found that many schools that use deeper learning, have better attendance and student behaviour, and stronger academic outcomes.

Merhebi says, “I think some teachers have been doing this for a very long time, but now we are able to really identify it and label it, and say this is what we are doing. We can be more intentional with our deep learning.”
