Debate Over Property Tax On Municipal Bus Garage

Saint John Transit has been seeking a property tax break for year, pointing out New Brunswick is the only province in Canada that charges its transit system $425,000 a year in property taxes that could be better used toward restoring bus routes.

Provincial NDP Leader Dominic Cardy says if elected, the NDP would work to turn that around, calling the state of public transit in the province “embarrassing.”

Saint John Transit General Manager Frank McCarey tells us if Saint John Transit got a property tax break for on its headquarters, it could restore as many as 5,000 service hours to bus routes that have been cut or eliminated.

McCarey says fleet replacement is a whole separate issue that the city would have to decide on.
