If you are a fan of the game of darts, you’ll probably be spending some time in Moncton this weekend.
The first ever Hub City Open will be held Friday through Sunday.
Spokesperson and player John Robichaud says hundreds from across Atlantic Canada and Quebec will take part.
“They’re planning on setting up around 44 boards, and in that case, you could see the potential for 177 players battling it out, or even more on Friday night,” Robichaud says.
The event will feature players including Jeff Smith from Hampton, who is a World Dart Federation World Cup Champion.
“These tournaments are popular. They have been in Saint John, Halifax, and Prince Edward Island. Moncton being in the centre, I think we have been missing out over the years and this is our chance to really grow it here again.”
Robichaud says the sport of darts continues to grow worldwide.
“It is definitely a sport, it is a huge event televised. In England, if you watch a huge tournament there’s up to 10,000 people in the stands watching the event.”
The Hub City Open is being held at the Days Inn on Upper Mountain Road, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Registrations is open all weekend.
