CTF Believes NB Budget Will Hurt Economy

New Brunswickers could be faced with a hike in the HST or perhaps tolls will be placed on major highways, or both – when the provincial budget is unveiled later today.

Either way, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation believes residents will be hit hard in the pocketbook.

Atlantic director Kevin Lacey says putting tolls on highways would be like putting another tax on top of a tax.

“But what makes these so damaging is that the government wants to put tolls on roads that taxpayers have already paid for through the gas tax. So you’d end paying for the roads you are driving on twice,” he notes.

Lacey adds residents are already paying more for most goods thanks to a slumping loonie and if the HST is increased, they’ll be paying an additional 2 percent.
