Crossroads For Women Shelter Gets Gov’t Funding

The federal and provincial governments have together announced $600,000 in funding to support the Crossroads for Women shelter in Moncton.

The organization also generated $2.5 million through its own fundraising campaign.

Executive director Tina Thibodeau says the need in the community continues to be a great for women and childen who are escaping domestic violence.

“Well, we went from 17 licensed beds to 41. I’m not going to lie, we are at a 90 percent occupancy rate on any given day. We are not refusing (anyone),” she notes.

Prior to the expansion in 2016, Thibodeau says about 60 percent of clients had to be turned away.

Ultimately, she adds more affordable housing is needed so that clients have a place to go to after leaving the shelter and they have their own environment.
