A special Parliamentary committee continues to hold hearings on whether the voting system should be changed to better reflect the percentage of votes received by each party.
Interim federal Conservative leader Rona Ambrose says whatever the committee comes up with should be put to a referendum. Previous referendums on changes to the way we vote have been defeated but Ambrose says that’s no reason not to hold one.
The NDP and Green Party favour a system of proportional representation. The Fraser Institute warns that kind of system will likely lead to coalition governments, greater government spending and higher deficits.
The federal Green Party and NDP would like a system of proportional representation. Green leader Elizabeth May says the Conservatives want to keep the status quo because they can win majorities with just 40 per cent of the vote.
