Complaints About Rail Cars With Oil Rise

The problem with odours emanating from the rail cars filled with oil at the Causeway being transported to Irving Oil’s rail terminal in Saint John is getting international attention with publication of a report by Reuters as a cautionary note to other cities considering such an arrangement.

Complaints are on the rise from residents nearby with one saying the odours are strong enough to burn your eyes. A complaint has been filed by Gordon Dalzell, who had been a member of the Coalition for Clean Air. He calls the situation unacceptable.

He adds Irving Oil is trying to do something about the odours but criticises the provincial Environment Department saying it made a big mistake by giving approval without requiring an environmental impact assessment.

Dalzell warns the odours you can smell are one thing but he’s concerned about the contaminants you can’t smell and what effect they have on peoples’ health.
