City Of Moncton Hosting Supplies Drive For Syrian Refugees

Donations are still needed for the over 150 Syrian refugees who are now calling Moncton home., and more are expected to arrive in the coming days.

A supplies drive is being held this weekend to replenish many of the start-up items.

Those include couches, table and chairs, car seats, children’s activities, preferably ones that do not require batteries and personal hygiene items.

Director of Economic Development and immigration for the City of Moncton Kevin Silliker says there are certain items they will not be accepting.

He says, “We don’t need bedding, and we don’t need clothing and we don’t want damaged furnishings. We are looking for items that are new or gently used.”

Items can be dropped off Saturday and Sunday between 9 and 5 at 50 MacNaughton Drive in the Caledonia Industrial Park.

What’s needed?

A. Personal hygiene items – new, unopened items only (soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, hair brushes/combs, hair elastics, hair dryer, razors, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, lotion)
B. Baby items (wipes, car seat or booster – unexpired, playpen, sippy cups, diapers – new only, various sizes)
C. First Aid Kit – new, unopened items only (acetaminophen, bandages, etc.)
D. House cleaning supplies (bucket and mop, sponges, cleaning products, broom and dust pan, dish soap/dish rack)
E. Laundry supplies (detergent, baskets, iron & ironing board, clothes hangers)
F. Kitchen supplies
a. For food preparation (glassware/mugs, cutlery, dishes, pitchers, cutting board, pots and pans, can opener, oven mitts, cookie sheets, muffin pans)
b. For food storage (storage containers, aluminum foil, sandwich/freezer bags)
c. Small appliances (toaster, coffee maker, tea pot/kettle)
G. Language learning tools (English and/or French: ABC/word books, DVD players with children’s educational videos, flashcards, magnetic letters and numbers, craft supplies board games, playing cards, whiteboard with dry erase markers, )
H. Linens – new only (bedding, towels, facecloths, comforters, blankets, dishcloths)
I. Furniture (lamps with lightbulbs, dressers, dining tables and chairs, sofas)
J. Various (ex. small vacuum cleaners, garbage cans & bags, shower curtain and rod, radios, TVs, clocks, curtains with rods, calendar/agenda, shoe mat)

The following items will not be accepted during the supplies drive on January 30-31:
– Clothing/shoes
– Beds (including frames, mattresses, pillows)
– Food donations
