City Of Dieppe Plants 82 Trees In Successful Fourth Year

A fourth successful year of tree planting is wrapped up in the City of Dieppe.

Urban Forestry Technologist Justin Poirier says the program offers discounted trees to Dieppe residents.

“The main criteria to qualify, is you have to have no trees in your front yard,” says Poirier. “On a basic standard lot you’d have the option of having one tree planted by the City, and if you’re on a corner lot, you’d have the option of having two trees.”

Poirier says this year they planted a total of 82 different species, and size of trees.

“Some will be 8 feet, some will be 15 feet, depending, usually the maples are bigger, the spec we buy from nurseries is around 45 millimetres,” says Poirier.

Poirier says they usually start accepting applications in February.

“There’s probably 30 people that were on our waiting list, so we might even increase our numbers [of trees] to let’s say maybe 100, that’s not confirmed yet,” says Poirier. “But the demand is there, we hoping to even increase it next year.”

He adds the trees are discounted to $50 dollars each, and are available on a first come, first served policy.

Residents are required to dig the holes for the trees themselves, generally to a depth of about 1 foot, and 4 feet across.
