City Looks At Options For Flyer Distribution

A number of residents are frustrated with the way flyers are being distributed through the city.

Some, like Frederic Laforge, say they would rather not receive them at all.

He launched a petition that currently has over 3000 signatures which he presented to the city, hoping they could create a by-law.

“There was some push-back from some councillors who felt the city shouldn’t be policing and have to make by-laws for things that the private sector should be doing themselves, I disagree,”

Laforge says the distributor had enough time to hear residents’ complaints and make changes, now the city has to step in.

City Staff are currently looking at a variety of options like the opt-in method.

Councillor Brian Hicks was particularly interested in the way Halifax operates.

“They have to either put those flyers in a mailbox, a mail slot or mail tube or within a few feet from the door to a residence,” Hicks says.

He says he understands this is a business tactic but says changes need to be made to the model.

Hicks says one resident even compared the service to drive by littering, as some residents don’t bother to pick them up.
