Candidate Names On Ballots Follow Elections Act Procedures

The appearance of candidate names on election ballots in New Brunswick is not a coincidence, and follows the law as laid down in the Elections Act.

Elections New Brunswick Chief Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth explains how that ranking works.

“First candidate listed is the candidate from the party that formed the government immediately before the election, so this year that would be a Liberal candidate,” says Poffenroth. “Then the next following candidate will be from the party of the Official Opposition, which would be a Progressive Conservative this time.”

Poffenroth says after that, candidates are ranked alphabetically according to the first letter of their party’s name.

Independent candidates are placed last, in alphabetical order according to their surname.
