Canada’s Former Ambassador to U.S. Declares Support For Energy East

Canada’s former ambassador to the United States and former NDP premier of Manitoba Gary Doer has formally declared his support for TransCanada’s proposed Energy East pipeline.

Speaking at a luncheon for Port Days in Saint John. Gary Doer said that getting oil to international markets and pipelines is essential.

“Let’s have a can-do attitude with a big vision and have a can do-attitude to get this pipeline built and get it to the Port of Saint John.”

Speaking with reporters after the speech, Doer said that people have a responsibility to review all infrastructure whether it’s transmission lines – which he supported going into the US – or pipelines – which he supported and approved when he was premier.

“The rationale for pipelines or me is I prefer to have oil in a pipeline than on rail, I prefer to have the safety factor that scientists have agreed on.”

New Brunswick premier Brian Gallant spoke before Doer at the event, and he reaffirmed the provincial government’s support for the pipeline saying that he will do all he can to move the project forward.

“It is a project that will help us increase the GDP throughout the country, including here in New Brunswick, at a time when we need to focus on growth.”
