Cap-Pelé Seafood Plant Destroyed By Fire

There’s no word on the cause of a large fire at a seafood processing plant in the village of Cap-Pelé.

Mayor Serge Léger says the Cape Bald Packers plant appears to be a total loss.

Speaking to our newsroom late Sunday morning, Léger said firefighters from several area departments battled the flames.

He said as many as 500 people work at the plant, but no injuries have been reported.

Officials are asking residents to avoid all non-essential travel on Bas Cap-Pelé Road.

The fire comes just three weeks after Cape Bald’s lobster plant in Bedec burned to the ground.

Many of those employees were offered jobs at the company’s two processing plants in Cap-Pelé
