BMHS holding 50th birthday bash

Bernice MacNaughton High School is celebrating.

A big birthday bash will be held on Sunday to honour 50 years.

“We’ve got inflatables, games, we have live entertainment, we have some wonderful services here from Moncton coming to bring their trucks, like the fire department and ambulance, Boyle Farm mobile petting zoo,” Music teacher Rebecca Moore told our newsroom.

BMHS started in 1975 as a trade school, but in 1999, it was reconfigured to a high school, incorporating all students, starting with grade 9.

“The following three years, they would add another grade level essentially until the first grad class, which was 2003,” Moore explained.

Since then, the school has grown to almost 1200 students, and all are invited to help celebrate, along with alumni and faculty, from the current and previous years.

“We have the Moncton Scottish Highland Association coming. Our students will be running games, face painting and giving tours of the school. And we are trying to raise funds for our theatre improvement project. Our theatre is 50 years old, so it needs some help. That’s in the form of a donation entrance, so donation by choice to get into the whole event. Then we’re having a barbecue and a canteen. We have new BMHS swag for alumni, parents and future Highlanders. And we’re having a summer raffle with some things that were donated from Magic Mountain, from Happy Brewing, and from Hopewell Eco Wellness Resort,” Vice-principal Amy Burke added.

Moore says they will have entertainment as well, with professional swing jazz group, ‘The Not So Big Band’ featuring current and former faculty.

“We’re really grateful to that group for donating their time and talents as our headlining entertainment,” Moore said.

Those attending will be able to tour the school and check out some of the history. Tours will be running every half hour.

Festivities at the BMHS 50th birthday party will be ongoing from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm on Sunday.
