The City of Moncton is putting out a warning to residents about blue-green algae in the reservoir of Irishtown Nature Park.
Natural Resource Program Coordinator Heather Fraser says the warm temperatures are responsible for the increase in algae.
She says the algae is at a moderate level right now and they’re asking people to avoid any water activities.
“It’s just more of a precautionary measure that the City takes for safety to ask people not to kayak and canoe, and ask dogs not to swim and drink the water,” says Fraser.
She says while it’s nothing toxic if people ignore the warning they might get a rash.
They will continue their weekly monitoring and update the public when it’s safe to go back in the water.
Signs and public advisories are posted on all park bulletin boards, as well as along the trail and at all water access points.
