Don’t get too excited if you get a text message claiming you’ve won a big lottery prize, because it’s most likely a scam.
The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is warning people about a scam doing the rounds asking you to send private information to an email address in order to claim your winnings.
ALC Manager of Risk Management and Investigations Jay Merritt says a legitimate lottery would never ask you for banking information through email or a text message.
He adds the best way to check if you’ve won is to call ALC directly, or check with your local retailer.
ALC says you should be wary of any lottery offering unsolicited cheques, or asking for a payment of some sort before you get your money.
You’re asked to report scam messages to the police or Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
