Beausejour MP Describes Experience During Lockdown On Parliament Hill

Like many of his colleagues on Parliament Hill Wednesday, Beausejour M-P Dominic LeBlanc spent hours huddled in a room trying to make sense of the tragic events that were unfolding.

At the time of the shootings, LeBlanc says he and his Atlantic Liberal caucus were meeting on the 5th floor in the centre block while federal leader Justin Trudeau was in a meeting in a room next door.

LeBlanc says he and his colleagues initially thought they heard construction noise.

“When the police started yelling, “Get down! Get down!” and we looked out the window and saw people running towards the building, and police officers running towards the building with their guns drawn, we realised that it was something much more serious than noise from a construction site.”

After spending six hours locked down in a meeting room, LeBlanc says he and his colleagues were moved to another, larger secure room where they joined Justin Trudeau and others.

He adds it was about 9:30 Wednesday night before they were finally escorted off Parliament Hill.
