Avi Lewis elected new federal NDP leader

The federal New Democratic Party has a new leader following the end of a six-month leadership race.

Avi Lewis was elected on the first ballot, receiving 56 percent of the vote, with 39,734 ballots cast in his favour.

The party uses a ranked ballot system, but Lewis secured enough support to win outright without multiple rounds.

He takes over from Jagmeet Singh, who announced plans to step down after the party’s losses in the 2025 federal election.

The NDP was reduced to seven seats in that vote and now holds six seats in the House of Commons.
