Atlantic Wellness Community Centre Forced To Scale Back Therapy Hours

The Atlantic Wellness Community Centre in Riverview has been providing mental health services to youth since 2011.

Since then they’ve helped about 500 clients.

But Spokesperson Laurie Fisher says due to a lack of donations, they had to make a very touch decision in November.

She says, “We had to scale back the hours of one of our Counsellors, because we just don’t have the money to pay. So, instead of having two Counsellors full time five days a week, we’ve had to scale back one of our Counsellors to one day a week.”

Fisher says for the first time ever, they have a waiting list.

The Centre is run solely on donations, and they do not receive any funding from any level of government.

The population of youth and young adults in the Greater Moncton area according to Stats Canada is 16,000, which means that upwards of 20% are impacted by mental illness or 3,200. That leaves over 600 youth and young adults without the services they require.
