Aggressive Mosquitoes Will Soon Be Gone

You may have had to apply a little extra DEET when you’ve been outside the past few evenings.

Mosquitoes have been out in swarms, and they’re looking to feed.

Biology Professor at Mount Allison University Ron Aitken says we’re seeing more mosquitoes in September than usual, but it’s because of the weather we’ve had over the past two months.

“Mosquitoes like it to be damp, rainy and then very warm. We had a pretty damp and rainy July, and then August was pretty warm, so they develop through that time and now they are coming out,” he notes.

Aitken says it won’t last, because the lifespan of a mosquito is short, and they’ll just naturally start going away, especially if we get a few nights with a good hard frost.

He says there are more than 30 species of mosquitoes in New Brunswick and some are more aggressive than others.
