It’s been a busy week regarding announcements for the New Brunswick’s Nuclear Research Cluster.
A second company has now announced it is investing $5 million towards operations and research including an office in Saint John.
U.K. company Moltex Energy is looking to commercially develop an SSR or Stable Salt Reactor which uses spent nuclear fuel as its fuel.

CEO Stephen Haighton says they decided to choose New Brunswick because it is nuclear friendly and has a proven Candu reactor at Lepreau. “Everybody talks about it but New Brunswick is actually doing something and we want to be associated with this. because we want to make sure this actually operationalizes and proves the case that we can sell electricity at lower than six cents per kilowatt hour,” says Haighton.
Haighton says there a single one of these modular reactors would be able to reach 300 megawatts but could be scaled up to 1,000 megawatts if warranted.
