A small group of citizens opposed to some of the actions taken due to COVID-19 held a peaceful rally in front of Moncton City Hall on Sunday to have their voices heard.
They were carrying placards with messages opposed to measures, as several motorists honked in support driving by.
Lise Doucette is one of the Organizers for the group. She feels the measure taken by the government for schooling are exaggerated and that masks should not be mandatory, “I think it might have some long term effects on the kids. Spraying that poison hand sanitizer on their hands five or six times a day. We think they should have school as normal, that’s our main thing.”
Co-Organizer Joanne Boudreau says she is questioning whether or not this is even a pandemic, “For me, what I am questioning is a lot of these measures that are in place today, If we had we done so a year ago in schools, we would have found that abusive, to separate kids, to have masks on and to have bubbles and such. We need to let kids go back to being free. The numbers do not lie. I am questioning whether or not this is even a pandemic at this point. If you look at the definition of a pandemic, you need to have a certain percentage of deaths and we’re not seeing that. The proof is just not there.”
Boudreau says viruses have existed since humanity began, “Are we going to wear masks forever? Are we going to consider these measures forever? Now they are saying, until there is a vaccine. We have a vaccine for the flu, but as far as I know we haven’t eradicated the flu, so where are going with this? How far is it going to go?”
This was their third rally in downtown Moncton. Boudreau says they will be there every Sunday afternoon from 1-3pm raising more awareness.
“I’m speaking to a lot of parents, and a lot of kids are anxious right now. They are sick to their stomach before going to school, they’re crying at home. it It is really a difficult situation right now for students and parents alike,” Boudreau says.
