One Way Main Street Experiment Continues

Cyclists say they now feel much safer downtown with a bi-directional bicycle lane alongside a one way Main Street between Botsford and Lutz Streets.

The changes were made about a month ago when Moncton City Council decided to help businesses expand their patios after the pandemic lockdown.

Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton CEO John Wishart feels a post-mortem will be needed when the experiment is over in September.

“The creation of the bike lane… was that the best use of real estate on the south side of Main? …or perhaps could there have been patio space for the south side businesses as well,” he wonders.

Wishart says the experiment doesn’t seem to be affecting traffic flow with drivers finding their way around the one way section.

He does give the city credit for trying something given the desperate situation that bars and restaurants were facing after reopening.
