Moncton Has Good Start In Building Sector

The City of Moncton got off to a decent start in 2020 in the building sector.

The total value of 121 building permits during the first quarter was nearly $23 million which is down slightly year-over-year.

A 76-unit apartment building in Lewisville and strong duplex construction were a large part of the residential permits at $13.3 million.

Commercial activity came in at $6.6 million and was driven by renovations to a parking garage on Alma Street, a research lab on Cooke Drive and a new gym on Mapleton Road.

Institutional permits accounted for $1.2 million with most of that from several renovation projects at local hospitals.

“The first quarter was a good start to 2020 building permit activity. There was a solid mix of commercial and residential projects initiated by the private sector”, said Kevin Silliker, Director of Economic Development.

“This quarter also saw our team working with many investors on projects in the development stage. We’ll continue to support our builder and construction community through recent events, but we are seeing developers holding steady on their plans for the most part.”
