Union Says Next Generation Of NB Farmers Need Support

Farmers in New Brunswick are getting older and there are challenges in retaining and recruiting workers in the industry.

Some may decide to pass their farms down to family members while others may considering selling.

National Farmer’s Union provincial president Rebeka Frazer-Chiasson says the next generation will be important.

“We need to make sure that we put all of the supports out there when it comes to young people taking ownership of existing farms or building from the ground up, their own farms,” she says.

Frazer-Chiasson notes how selling a farm can be a challenge especially under the supply management system.

She adds dairy, eggs or poultry farms are expensive to buy and she adds there are often few opportunities for markets if you’re in other commodities.

In conjunction with the province, the Agricultural Alliance is now seeking input from farmers on how to sustain the industry going forward.
