Ladies Hoop Classic In Moncton, A Slam Dunk

Female basketball players hit the Moncton High court tonight, as the annual Ladies Hoop Classic got underway.

Five local teams and three others from PEI and Nova Scotia will compete.

Co-Chair Heather Stordy tells us what teams are taking part this year, “Harrison Trimble, Bernice MacNaughton, Moncton High and Riverview High are four of the teams. This year we are also inviting Mathieu Martin, Lockview High, and Horton High schools from Nova Scotia, Charlottetown Rural from PEI.

This is the 25th year for the Classic.

Stordy says the tournament started when the ladies decided they wanted to get together and start competing, “There was already a boys tournament, so the ladies wanted one as well. In April of 1996, there was the very first tournament. Augusta Maine and the Greater Moncton schools got together to play,” Stordy says.

Stordy says basketball is growing in popularity, especially amongst the ladies.

“It is a popular sport amongst our young girls. We have various feeder organizations, and girls are playing at the elementary level, and then continuing in high schools,” Stordy says.

The tournament runs until Saturday night.
