Legs For Literacy Celebrates 20 Years

For 20 year, Legs for Literacy has been raising money to help fund a number of literacy projects in Moncton.

About 300 runners, young and old participated in yesterday’s event.

This year, the group decide to put on a smaller event to celebrate the countless volunteers over the years.

Interim Director for the event Krysta Cowling says over the last two decades, the event has raised over 700 thousand dollars.

“It’s really a celebration of running and active living in our community and it raises money for literacy initiatives so money raised from the event will go towards different programs focusing on children and youth reading,” says Cowling.

This year, they held decided to go back to their roots and organize a 5K Family Fun Run.

Cowling says they wanted to celebrate the people that make the event possible year after year.

Norm Bowen, member of the board for Legs for Literacy says the team decided to throw a small celebration event.

“So volunteers from previous years would be able to come out an enjoy the run, so there’s many former members of the board, former committee members running in the event today as they can enjoy it. Celebrating Legs and all the work they’ve done, because most of them have taken it on for 19 years until now,” he says.

He says it was nice to see participants wearing different t-shirts from past events.

Haley Bowen was also on the committee for this year’s event. She was happy to see such a great turnout.

“It’s nice to know that people are still interested in Legs for Literacy and come out and support, that’s what keeps us going. It’s nice that we had the opportunity this year to have the volunteers run it and we still have a lot of other people from the community come out too,” she says.
