Challenging Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Moncton Rooming House

A large fire in a three storey rooming house on St.George Street posed some challenges for the Moncton Fire Department.

Acting Platoon Chief Paul MacFadyen says when they arrived on scene at around 8:45pm, they found a garage engulfed in flames.

From there, the fire spread to the exterior of the house, and then up into the roof and attic.

MacFadyen says age, renovations that had been done to the home, along with several layers of roofing material, made it more difficult for firefighters.

Four crews were on scene were on scene until around 1:30 this morning.

MacFadyen says the garage was destroyed and there is significant damage to the rooming house.

One firefighter suffered injuries to his left arm, but MacFadyen says he is doing okay.

The Canadian Red Cross says at least 18 tenants have been left homeless.

They assisted eight tenants last night by providing emergency lodging. Others found a temporary place to stay with friends or relatives.

There’s no word on a cause yet.
