It is that time of year when many of us think about ways to get rid of our Christmas tree.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada has a quick and easy suggestion: just put it in your backyard.
Spokesperson Jessica Panetta said you will notice a lot of wildlife will be attracted to it.
“If you place it near a bird feeder, birds will actually use it as a resting spot in between feeding themselves,” Panetta said.
“If it’s cold or stormy, they might actually find shelter in it overnight.”
In the spring, chop off the branches, lay them in your garden and place the trunk on soil to speed up decomposition.
Panetta said the process is also a chance for kids to learn about what actually happens in the forest.
“When trees die and they fall on their side, they recycle themselves,” she said. “It’s a nice lesson for everyone.”
