The issue of floods and the costs associated with them has prompted the Insurance Bureau of Canada to issue a 68-page report.
It calls for the preservation of forests and wetlands to stop flooding and that is welcome news to Andrew Holland.
He is the National Media Director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada and says preserving not paving will help to keep flood waters out of populated areas.
“Increased claims for property damage and damage to infrastructure because you are seeing these costs escalate more and more because these severe storm weather events are not happening every 100 years they are happening all the time now,” says Holland.
Holland says “If you do a little bit more of protection of wetlands this helps absorb water, they mitigate floods and protect our communities.”
Holland says the Nature Conservancy of Canada is pleased to see the IBC join the discussion on the importance of wetlands and forests.
