Forty-nine swimmers will take to the water this weekend to cross the Northumberland Strait from New Brunswick to PEI.
They’re taking part in the Big Swim, to raise money for Brigadoon Village in Nova Scotia.
It’s a camp, designed for children and youth with a chronic illness or a chronic condition.
Logan Keirstead, who is from the Moncton area, will be completing the swim for the second time, along with her sister Zoe.
She says weather can pose a challenge and when you start the swim, it can seem like a very big feat, “You try not to get overwhelmed with the vastness of the water. As soon as you get in on the New Brunswick side, you cannot see the PEI side, and the Bridge is massive and there is really no concept of how far you’ve gone or how far you have to go.”
They’ll leave at 7:30 Sunday morning, from Cape Jourmain, and are expected to arrive by around 12:30 in Borden, PEI..
“Everyone has a kayaker, so if you are in the area, we should a be a pretty visible bunch. We will cross under the Bridge, and will end up on the left side on the beach on the PEI side,” Keirstead says.
She hopes to raise $10,000 through donations for the Big Swim.
“I had never been aware of Brigadoon Village camp and then in 2015, it definitely opened my eyes. This year, I went down to the camp, because they had an open house, so we got to walk around and see the facilities and it was really inspiring,” Keirstead says.
Keirstead says the weather can pose a challenge for the swimmers, but the forecast right now is calling for sunny skies.
