Another dog has died after swimming in a New Brunswick river, but officials say this death is not linked to blue-green algae.
The province says in a statement the dog died after swimming in the Kennebecasis River.
A necropsy examination done by the provincial veterinary lab determined the dog died after a cancerous tumour on its spleen ruptured.
“This is a common malignancy in dogs, and affected dogs often collapse and die suddenly when the tumours rupture, causing internal hemorrhage,” the statement said.
A dog that died after swimming in the Kennebecasis River was brought to the NB Provincial Veterinary Laboratory for necropsy examination.
Through the examination, it was determined that the dog died of internal hemorrhage due to rupture of a tumour affecting the spleen. (1/3)— Government of NB (@Gov_NB) August 8, 2018
“Our condolences to the owners on their loss.”
The death comes just days after two dogs died from blue-green algae after being in or near the Saint John River in Fredericton.
Officials say they will test samples from the dog and the area where it died to rule out the possibility of blue-green algae toxins.
